Bio:
M. Sunflower is a culturally diverse First Nations Australian with disabilities. A descendant of the Aboriginal Warmuli people of the Dharug Nation, through Kitty who was Stolen and in the first cohort held in Parramatta Native Institution in 1814 at 5yrs old; Lebanese migrants through 1947 Haifa, Palestine aboard the Partizanka; Chinese gold rush era migrants from the mouth of the Pearl River; and multiple UK convicts traced through Ireland and England, back to 1657s Dorsetshire. M. Sunflower’s unique and isolating ancestral matrix embodies the diverse ancestral legacy of Australia’s painful and complex colonial past.
She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Photomedia) from Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and is former Co-Director of the Board at Firstdraft; an Advisory Committee Member for National Ethnic Disability Alliance, and Accessible Arts; a Peer Assessor for Creative Australia as well as Bundanon, UTS Library, and the 2025 IMAGinE Awards in the past.
Community Care as Activism and Advocacy through her unique lens of Intersectional Marginalisation is her passion and privilege. Her interdisciplinary practice entwines painting, textiles, sculpture, photography, video, literature, multimedia, installation and more; using art as activism for Community Care, Justice, and exploration of Intersectional Identity, Trauma and Disability. She founded Off The Wall Gallery, an outdoor and online pop-up ARI centered on creating opportunities for marginalised artists to exhibit Artivism as ArtVertising. She is a strong advocate for human rights for marginalised peoples of all identities.
